Shrink Wrap What?

This is the second post in a series covering a few industries and products that commonly use shrink wrap packaging. Our last post covered some food products that were commonly packaged in shrink wrap. For each product listed we went over some common reasons shrink wrap was chosen to wrap those particular products.

This post is going to focus on using shrink wrap for packaging paper products and stationery. Below are some products in these industries that are commonly shrink wrapped and a few reasons why packagers choose to use shrink wrap for each product.

Office Paper Products- A variety of companies that produce office paper product choose shrink wrap for packaging their products. Some of the common products in this category that are shrink wrapped are folders, notebooks, and notepads. Shrink wrap is often chosen because it is affordable. Shrink wrap also provides a durable seal to help protect paper products from moisture and dirt. Shrink wrap is also chosen because of its ability to conform to the paper product without crushing corners.

Books, Magazines, Gift Wrap, Bulk greeting cards- Gift wrap rolls are commonly shrink wrapped because of the above-mentioned reasons. Shrink wrap is also used to wrap gift wrapping rolls because of the weight of the shrink film. Durable shrink film allows the rolls to transported and moved in lightweight durable packaging. The shrink wrap is also clear allowing customers to view the wrapping paper in a retail setting. Bulk greeting cards are often packaged using a light cardboard container with the shrink wrap over the container. The shrink wrap helps to keep the cards contained in the cardboard container or backing. Magazine and book publishers some times choose to use shrink wrap to help protect interior pages from becoming bent and disfigured.

For years, PVC shrink wrap was the chosen film for wrapping the paper products above. PVC shrink film is commonly a more affordable shrink film and many packagers chose to use it for paper products. In recent years, many manufacturers have moved towards using polyolefin shrink film because of the various benefits polyolefin film offers over PVC shrink wrap. If you do choose to use PVC shrink wrap we recommend that you have proper ventilation when sealing the film. The chloride fumes produced by the shrink film can harmful if inhaled.
