Shrink Wrapping For E-commerce Sales

Selling products on Ebay, Etsy, Amazon, or your own website can be a very rewarding and lucrative experience. Amazon, Ebay, and Etsy logosWhether making your own products or reselling products, business owners can list products for sale and watch the sales roll in with enough hard work and determination. After enough sales are obtained some business owners may begin to consider alternate forms of product packaging.

The consideration for an alternate form of packaging may come from necessity or want. Some business owners find that products are becoming damaged during transport, while others are wanting to offer a more professional looking packaging. Shrink wrapping can be a solution to many packaging woes. In this post we are going to look at the benefits and uses of shrink wrapping for e-commerce sales and how they may benefit a variety of e-commerce packaging needs.

Often confused with stretch film or vacuum packaging, shrink wrapping involves applying heat to a film to enable it to shrink and conform to the product being wrapped. One of the most widely recognized uses of shrink film is the film used around water bottle cases.

Types of Shrink Film

Shrink Film- Shrink film comes in a variety of forms and is commonly made of four materials. Shrink film can be purchased on single wound and centerfolded rolls. A single wound roll comes off the roll flat, while a centerfolded roll is folded in half length ways. Shrink bags are also a very commonly used form of shrink wrapping and are available in a variety of different sizes. Shrink tubing is the last most common for of shrink wrapping and often comes on a lay flat roll.

The most common material is a PVC shrink film that has a consistency of a cellophane wrap. PVC is crinkly before being shrunk and after heat is applied becomes harder and more rigid.

Polyolefin shrink film is quickly becoming one of the most common materials used in shrink wrapping. It is a softer shrink film with more elasticity than PVC and is also FDA approved for direct food contact.

Polyethylene and polypropylene are strong durable shrink films often used to wrap large heavy products. Cases of water bottles are often packaged with polyethylene shrink film.

What is Needed for Professional Shrink Wrapping

After the form of shrink film is chosen and the material is chosen, two basic items are needed to obtain a professional factory style look.Heat Sealer

Heat Sealer- Heat sealers come in a variety of sizes and styles to accommodate different product sizes and production levels. The most basic heat sealer is an impulse sealer. An impulse sealer has one sealing bar to seal and close open ends. Impulse sealers can be purchases for under $100 up to $400 depending on the size.

The most common heat sealers for medium to high output production are L-Bar sealers. L-Bar sealersL-bar-sealer are used with centerfold shrink film. The two sealing sides of an L-Bar sealer seals and closes all open ends in one motion. L-Bar sealers range in price from $600 up to several thousands of dollars based on size and amenities.

Heating Element- After a heat sealer is used to close the open ends of a shrink wrap package, heat must be applied to the film to shrink it and conform it to the product. For low output shrink wrapping applications, a heat gun is the most common heating element used. Heat guns are available for $50 or less depending on the wattage used.1808-Shrink-Tunnel

For higher production shrink wrapping applications a shrink tunnel is the way to go. A shrink tunnel has a conveyor running through a heated oven. The products are shrunk down and ejected out of the opposite end of the tunnel. Shrink tunnels start at $2000 and can be up to several thousands of dollars depending on size and conveyor speed.

How Can Shrink Wrapping Help My E-commerce Business?

The use of shrink wrap packaging can help e-commerce businesses in several ways. Below is a list of problems shrink wrapping can offer a solution for.Bundled Shrink Wrap Products

Damaged or Leaking Products- One of the worst things customers and businesses can experience is damaged product arrivals. When customers order a product and the product is damaged or leaking everywhere upon arrival. Shrink film can remedy some of these problems.

If multiple products are being shipped within a box, shrink film can be used to bundle the products together. ThisLiquid Leaking Shrink Wrap will help to reduce product shift during transport and when used with the proper void-fill can dramatically reduce damaged products.

For liquid items, shrink film can enclose the container to prevent liquids from leaking all over other products within the shipping container. This is a common use for shrink film with e-commerce businesses. Shrink film can also help caps stay on during transport to reduce leakage.

Increased Professionalism- Shrink wrapping is one of the most affordable and professional packaging solutions Branded Shrink Wrap Productsavailable. Business owners can produce a professional factory look for a few hundred dollars with the right shrink wrap equipment. Once the proper seals and shrink rate is obtained a professionally designed sticker can be applied to the film for branding and product marketing.

Tamper Evidence- Shrink wrapping is a great way to ensure customers are purchasing a product that has not been Tamper Evident Shrink Wrappingtampered with since it was packaged and shipped by the seller. Many e-commerce businesses ship shrink wrapped products with stickers that tell customers not to use the product if the shrink wrap is opened. This offers peace-of-mind to customers to guarantee the product has not been handled since leaving the seller.

U.S. Packaging & Wrapping Year In Review

This year was an exciting year for America and U.S. Packaging & Wrapping. The country continues to climb out of recession and many businesses are increasing sales. Increased sales and production for businesses means more demand for packaging products.

We want to thank all of our customers from small start-up companies to large multi-billion dollar companies. All of our customers matter and we try to exceed all expectations. We believe in the private sector and want to do what we can to help business succeed and meet their customers needs.

This year, to help assist our customers we focused on several areas, one being product videos and demonstrations. Our Youtube account features over 50 video tutorials. Anytime our sales staff or customer service department receives repeat questions about certain problems or specific item in we try to make a video to use as a visual aid.

Below are some of our more popular videos from 2014.

We created this video around March of this year. We had a lot of customers calling after watching our Iphone shrink wrapping video wanting to know how an Ipad would look before they bought our 13″ I-Bar system. Our marketing team decided the video would be a great compliment to the existing Iphone video as well as a great visual aid to potential customers.

The video of our portable L-Bar sealer is an excellent visual display of our L-Bar sealer capability. This video shows what an L-Bar sealer does and why it is an efficient way to seal centerfold shrink wrap.

We receive multiple calls each day about the differences between PVC and Polyolefin shrink film. Our marketing team put together a video to display the differences between the two films. Some difficult differences to display on camera is the differences in the texture and smell of the two films.

Our shrink packaging systems have quickly became a favorite packaging product for companies across the United States. They are all-in-one systems to seal and shrink products. An excellent option for companies concerned about saving space and time.

New Products

Another focus in 2014 and will be in 2015 is product development. We are constantly trying to find new products and machines to complement our existing offerings. This year we were able to add a variety of products to our offering. See a couple of our more popular new products below.

Food & Meat Wrapping MachineOne of our best-selling items of 2014. An ideal machine for meat markets, general stores, grocery stores, and more. Our product development team decided to add the food and meat wrapping machine to our product offering to complement our existing meat film line.

100 Gauge Meat FilmFor years we always offered a 70 gauge meat film as our thickest meat film. After several requests from customers we are now offering a 100 gauge meat film in 15 and 18 inch widths. The 100 gauge meat film works great for long-term freezer storage.

Colored Shrink FilmThis is another product often requested by customers. After determining common colors and sizes, we began offering 500 ft. and 2000 ft. colored PVC shrink rolls in multiple sizes and colors. We have sold hundreds of colored film rolls to companies across the United States since we began offering this item earlier in the year.

Auto Bundling Stretch Film RollsWe began offering auto bundling rolls earlier in the year and they immediately began to sell. Many of our existing bundling film customers purchased auto rolls by the pallet.

There are many other products that were added to our product offering throughout this year, but the ones listed are some new products that immediately took off.

Another very important part of our customer experience focus this year was our discounts. This year we offered hundreds of thousands of dollars in discounts to our customers. These discounts come in a variety of forms. In just packaging points alone there were over 500,000 points redeemed equal to over $500,000 in customer savings.

The other discounts were experienced through price breaks and sale items. All of our products offered are available at discount pricing with 5 or more mix and matched products. This is something that has always been offered. The discounts we worked really hard to improve this year were our sale items. We now offer a large selection of heat shrink wrap specials and stretch film specials.

We are looking forward to 2015 and growing with your business. We will post a blog post in a few days about new and exciting things to look forward to in 2015. We would like to thank our customers again for a wonderful and prosperous 2014. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Reduce Shrink Wrap Waste!

We are always advocates for reducing packaging waste. The reduction of packaging waste can reduce environmental impact as well as reduce packaging costs. We wrote an article last year about reducing stretch film waste. The focus on that article was increasing load efficiency. More efficient loads with more products requires less pallets to be wrapped.

Earlier this year we wrote a follow-up article titled Stretch Wrap Savings. This article focused on reducing stretch film waste by down gauging and using a stronger, stiffer stretch film. One issue we have never addressed in a blog post is the reduction of shrink wrap waste. There are two primary ways to reduce shrink wrap waste and save money on film costs. We will highlight each way in text as well as show videos of how to reduce shrink wrap waste.

Reduce Centerfold Film Width

Both PVC and Polyolefin centerfold shrink film are often used with high-speed machines. Whether running a high-speed machine or a manual machine, reducing the width of the shrink film roll can dramatically reduce waste and cost.

When wrapping a product, if there is more than 1.5 inches of excess film after the seal is made, a smaller width of film can be used. Reducing film width by two inches on a standard 3500 ft. x 75 gauge polyolefin shrink roll will save 583 square ft. of shrink film.

Excess waste is common when companies are wrapping products of different sizes. If the plan is to only wrap a few products of different sizes, buying one large roll of shrink film to cover all products is an economical option. If wrapping hundreds or thousands of different sized products, buying a centerfold film width to accommodate each different product size will reduce film waste and cost.

The video below shows the excess film waste using a 12 inch roll when an 8 inch roll can be used. The total square footage saved over a 3500 ft. roll is 1166 square ft. That is half of the total square footage in an 8″x3500’x75 ga. polyolefin roll.

Make One Bag Two Bags

Shrink bags are a very popular shrink wrapping product. Companies use them to wrap a large variety of objects. One of the negatives about using shrink bags is they are only stocked in certain sizes. This can mean excess waste when wrapping products that do not fit exactly into the bag you are wrapping.

With shrink bags, most waste often comes from the excess length of the bag. There are several occasions that one shrink bag can be made into two bags with a couple of extra seals. Depending on the products being wrapped, one shrink bag can often be made into multiple bags.

This concept can be used with shrink tubing as well as centerfold shrink film. With shrink tubing, the smallest roll we offer is 2.5 inches wide which will fit a product with a circumference up to 4.5 inches. If your product only has a 2 inch circumference, then two tubes can be made out of a 2.5 inch tubing.

Centerfold shrink film is often hard to find in anything less than 6 to 8 inches wide. This can mean a lot of waste for small products. The ability to use the excess centerfold will reduce waste and cost. Because this is hard to explain exactly how to do it, we have made a video below to see what we are referring to.

The video below shows how to wrap multiple small products with a 12″ centerfold shrink wrap roll. It also shows how to make multiple shrink bags from one bag and multiple packages from shrink tubing.

Both ideas mentioned in this post are excellent ways to reduce shrink film waste and reduce shrink film cost. If you have any questions about the products used in this video or any other shrink wrapping products call us at 1-800-441-5090.
