Black Conductive Bag Benefits and Specs

Choosing the right type of bag is vital when packaging electronic components, chemical and powder explosives, and other sensitive products.

Electrostatic discharge – or ESD – can damage delicate microchips, circuits, and semiconductors during shipping, handling, and storage. ESD is a sudden and momentary flow of electric current between two charged objects when brought close to each other or when the dielectric between them breaks down, causing a spark of static electricity.

That’s where black conductive bags come in.

These bags are made with a single layer of carbon-loaded polyethylene. They are humidity-independent and fully opaque.

The black conductive bags act as a Faraday cage to prevent ESD and eliminate static charges.

A Faraday cage is a conductive enclosure that blocks external electromagnetic fields and electrical currents. Named after the scientist Michael Faraday, it works by distributing charge around the exterior of the cage, thereby forcing the net electric field inside to zero.

Conductive bags are not the same as anti-static bags, which prevent static electricity from building up on the packaging. Conductive bags, though, transfer electrical charges away from sensitive objects.

These black conductive bags are fully printable and provide a clean, professional appearance. They are an excellent choice for ESD-sensitive areas and applications that require clean, permanent ESD protection.

Black conductive bags can be heat-sealed with a continuous band sealer.

Other key features include:

  • Strong physical properties: Tensile Strength > 2,000 PSI, Elongation > 200%, Dart Impact 250–700 grams, Tear Strength > 400 lbs/inch, Mullen Burst 20–60 PSI
  • Excellent electrical performance: Volume Resistivity < 30,000 OHMS/cm, Surface Resistivity < 30,000 OHMS/sq, Surface Resistance <1.+ E5
  • Meets all physical and electrical requirements of MIL-DTL-82646B (except material identification markings)

U.S. Packaging & Wrapping offers a wide variety of sizes for black conductive bags. The bags come in a case of 100. Our sizes range from our 4×6 bag at $27.55 to a 24×36 at $383.40.

Reach out to our sales department for custom options and volume discounts for orders of 5 or more cases.

Black conductive tubing is also available in a variety of widths and lengths. Rolls of conductive tubing are available in widths from 4 to 24 inches. Tubing can easily be sealed to completely enclose products.

Frequently asked questions include:

  • How soon will I get them if ordered today?
    • Our black conductive bags are in stock in our warehouse. They can be shipped out within 24 hours.
  • How are they shipped?
    • Depending on the quantity, our bags are shipped ground via UPS or FedEx. If the order is large, we may have to ship it freight with our wide network of carriers.
  • Can I get samples?
    • Yes! Samples are available. Call (1-800-441-5090) or email (customerservice@uspackagingandwrapping.com) and speak with a salesperson. Samples are free and typically shipped through the U.S. Postal Service. If you prefer tracking, there is a $10 fee for shipping through FedEx or UPS.
  • At what temperature do you seal the bags?
    • Black conductive bags can be sealed with temperatures ranging from 250 degrees to 375 degrees for 0.5 to 3.5 seconds.
  • Are black conductive bags reusable?
    • No, they cannot be reused. Reusing ESD bags can introduce debris or other contamination and can cause the bag to tear. It is considered best practice in ESD control to use fresh packaging to maintain integrity and compliance
