What is Perforated Shrink Wrap?

The word “perforated” is an ambiguous term in packaging. When it comes to perforated shrink wrap, it can refer to several products. In this article, we will explore what perforated shrink film is, its benefits, and the various types available.

What is perforated shrink wrap?

According to dictionary.com, perforated means to pierce with holes. This is an accurate definition when related to shrink film. The orientation of the piercings and the type of shrink film are key differences in products.

Below are three examples of shrink film with perforations. It is essential to know what you are asking for when making a purchase to ensure you receive the correct item.

Perforated Centerfold Shrink Wrap

Centerfold shrink film is placed on a roll folded in half lengthways. This means a twelve-inch centerfold roll would open up to twenty-four inches in width. The product is placed between the two layers of film, and the open sides are sealed.

The sealed package is not able to allow air to escape when the shrink film is heated. This is the reason for perforated shrink film. Some machines are equipped with hole perforators to puncture the material during the sealing and shrinking process. Many smaller machines such as the I bar sealers and tabletop L bar sealers do not have perforators, and this is the reason for perforated centerfold shrink film.

The perforations can be arranged however the manufacturer prefers. They are often spaced out and run the length of the film. The pre-made holes allow air to escape when the film is heated. The holes are tiny and can only be seen when looking for them in the film.

U.S. Packaging and Wrapping has a variety of perforated centerfold shrink wrap sizes available, from 8” to 18” wide on a 3,500-foot roll. All of our centerfold perforated shrink rolls come in a 75-gauge thickness. We offer discounts on orders of five or more rolls, with custom options available.

Perforated Single-wound Shrink Wrap

Single-wound shrink wrap comes off the roll flat and ready to use. This type of shrink film can be used in a wide range of applications. In many applications, perforations are not required for flat shrink film, such as case packaging for bottles. The single-wound bundling film has open ends and does not require perforations for air to escape.

Perforations are required on single-wound shrink film when set sheet sizes are needed. Instead of tiny holes to allow air to escape like the centerfold shrink wrap, these holes are made for easy-tear sheets.

Perforated single-wound shrink rolls also come in a variety of widths, materials, and sheet sizes. Easy-tear pizza shrink film sheets for pizza cappers are an excellent example of perforated single-wound film. The sheets come on a roll with perforations at a set distance from each other. We offer pizza shrink film in squares ranging from 16” to 30” to cover pizzas with diameters from 8” to 20”. All film rolls are a 60-gauge thickness.

Commercial printers also use a variety of printer’s film. These are perforated sheets that either cling to products or shrink when heat is applied. These pre-made sheets are often square, but some additional sizes are available.

The sheets seal out exterior elements and extend the life of pre-made pizzas with transparent packaging. We recommend a stainless steel perforated wrap dispenser for efficient packaging with perforated sheets.

Perforated Shrink Bands?

Most shrink bands are made from a PVC material. The bands are applied around the lid of plastic or glass containers, helping to make them tamper-evident. The shrink bands are available with horizontal or vertical perforations for easy tearing.

The bands are used as a confirmation to customers that the product has not been tampered with. If the band is broken, the security may have been breached. The perforated lines in the banding allow easy opening when needed for customers to access the product. The arrangement and layout of the perforations vary depending on the dimensions of the shrink band.

What are the uses for perforated shrink film?

  • Prevents Ballooning

With standard centerfold shrink film, air can get trapped inside, causing it to balloon. This doesn’t happen with perforated shrink film because the air escapes through the holes as the film moves through the heat tunnel.

  • Pre-Sized Sheets

The pre-sized sheets allow for set sizes, enabling workers to tear and go as needed. Set sizes of pizza shrink film sheets, and printer’s film enable businesses to have consistent sizing for everything they wrap.

  • Tamper-Evident Packaging

Ensuring products reach customers without being tampered with is important for most manufacturers. Perforated, easy-tear shrink bands enable consumers to open bottles and containers with confidence.
